How to Recycle Paper Packaging Correctly: Tips & Tricks

Properly recycling paper packaging is essential for protecting the environment and conserving resources. Here are some tips and tricks to help you recycle paper packaging correctly.

Types of Paper That Can Be Recycled

  • cardboard: cereal boxes made from 100% cardboard, shoe boxes, cardboard crates and other similar packaging;
  • printer paper and office paper: paper used in printers, photocopiers and notebooks;
  • newspapers and magazines: these are accepted by most recycling centres;
  • paper bags: paper shopping bags and envelopes (100% paper);
  • corrugated cardboard: used for large packaging and transport boxes.

Types of Paper That CANNOT Be Recycled

Recycling is essential for a cleaner and more sustainable planet, but not all types of paper can be recycled. These include waxed paper, photographic paper, laminated paper bags, thermal paper used for receipts, and dirty or contaminated paper. Paper products treated in this way cannot be recycled because the process of separating the fibres is complex and may become difficult or even impossible.

Sometimes, problems are caused not only by chemical treatments applied to paper, but also by contamination. Dirty paper can contaminate other recyclable materials in the same batch, making it impossible to recycle the entire batch. This can lead to wasted resources and increased pollution.

Separating and Preparing Paper

Different types of paper cannot be recycled together because each has a different composition and structure. For example, newspaper has a different texture and density from office paper or cardboard. This variety can affect the quality of recycled products.

If you have mixed paper packaging (paper with plastic, paper with metal), try to separate the recyclable components before disposing of them.

Before being recycled, paper should be as clean as possible and free from foreign elements such as staples, adhesive tape or other materials. Dirty or greasy paper cannot be recycled because it may contaminate the entire batch.

It is advisable to keep paper dry and clean while waiting for it to be recycled. Paper should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated place, away from moisture and other elements that could damage it.

Tips for Effective Recycling

In a digitalised world, there are numerous alternatives for notes, invoices and reading materials that can significantly contribute to conserving natural resources. In addition, another resource-saving strategy is printing on both sides of a sheet of paper, thereby reducing paper requirements by half.

Every type of paper, including white office paper, newspapers, cardboard, magazines, paper bags and cereal boxes, can be recycled, but it must be separated before being taken to a recycling point.

It is recommended that you have separate recycling bins for paper at home or in the office. This helps with separate collection and better organisation of the recycling process. To save space in the recycling bin, fold or flatten cardboard boxes.

Information and Education

It is important to understand the impact our actions have on the environment. The consequences of pollution and waste accumulation can be avoided through simple recycling measures. The benefits of recycling are numerous, from conserving resources to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Awareness campaigns, training workshops, educational materials, the mass media and social networks can be used to educate the public about the importance of recycling.

Recycling can also be promoted through concrete actions at an individual or community level. Organising waste collection events, taking part in recycling programmes or sharing information about recycling in the local community are just a few examples of such actions.

By following these tips and tricks, you can help create a cleaner and healthier environment by properly recycling paper packaging!
