The 6 S – Packaging operations during COVID-19 must continue. But how can you protect your employees in this context? Implementing an organisational system is very important! The 6 S system can prevent the virus from spreading between employees and also to customers through the products they purchase.
Here is how you can use the 6 S in this context:
1. SORTING: Remove anything unnecessary from the working environment (from the office, warehouse, etc.). The more objects you have around you, the greater the chance of contaminating more items, requiring more time to disinfect them.
2. SETTING IN ORDER: After removing unnecessary objects, you need to organise the ones that remain. Good organisation helps reduce the time and space needed to find things. Unnecessary movement increases the risk of contamination, allowing the virus to spread more quickly. In addition, organisation is effective regardless of the circumstances. Nobody likes wasting time looking for what they need among items that have been piled together.
3. SHINE: Make sure everything is thoroughly clean, with one additional step: decontamination. Wipe everything with sanitising/disinfecting products such as: surface disinfectant or alcohol-based hand sanitiser. At the main entrance, you can place an antibacterial mat to ensure that employees’ footwear is disinfected before they enter the office and to help keep the floors clean.

4. STANDARDISATION: It is not enough to rely on individual memory. Create a checklist to ensure that all these tasks are performed systematically. Allocate the necessary time to complete these tasks at the beginning or end of each work shift. Assign specific people to take care of specific areas. Each person should be responsible for the checklist for a particular area.
5. SUSTAIN: Establishing a habit is the responsibility of managers and supervisors. To implement it, you must ensure that it is put into practice every day. This is the most difficult step to complete, as these habits must be maintained just as they were on the first day.
6. SOCIAL DISTANCING: Safety is generally the sixth S, but under these circumstances we need additional, specific safety measures, namely social distancing. Maintaining social distancing in the workplace is very difficult compared with other environments. Separating employees is difficult, but not impossible. Offices can be shared by 2 people, provided they are properly equipped with disposable gloves, a respiratory protective mask, medical coveralls, depending on requirements and the working environment. The air in rooms can also be sterilised using UV lamps.
