Do you frequently transport goods on pallets and notice that some boxes arrive at their destination deformed? Problems usually occur at the edges, where the pressure from stretch film or strapping is greater. Cardboard edge protectors help you stabilise the load and reduce transport losses.
If you manage an online shop, factory or logistics warehouse, you need clear solutions that can be applied immediately. INATECH Packaging presents useful details and recommendations for choosing and correctly using cardboard edge protectors, so that you can protect your products and optimise operating costs.
Cardboard edge protectors are rigid L-shaped profiles made from several layers of pressed and bonded kraft cardboard. Their layered structure gives them good compression strength and the ability to distribute evenly the force exerted by stretch film or PET and PP straps.
You use them to protect the vertical edges of the pallet, as well as to reinforce horizontal areas exposed to high pressure. In most cases, thickness ranges from 3 mm to 8 mm, while the wing widths can be 35×35 mm, 50×50 mm or 70×70 mm, depending on the load size.
The material is recyclable and may come from FSC-certified sources, supporting the sustainability policies adopted by many companies in Romania. However, you should bear in mind that moisture resistance is limited unless you choose specially treated versions.
Without edge protection, stretch film compresses the outer boxes directly. Deformation occurs, and fragile products such as electronic components or bottles packed in multipacks may be damaged.
Edge protectors reinforce the entire stack. These cardboard accessories maintain the shape of the pallet and distribute the weight vertically, reducing the risk of tilting during forklift handling or long-distance transport. For stable results, use edge protectors on all four corners and adapt the thickness to the weight of the goods.
In terms of costs, you reduce the number of returns and complaints. In many situations, you also reduce stretch film consumption because the load becomes more compact and requires fewer layers for securing.
Follow this guide to correct palletising, using cardboard edge protectors and other protective elements efficiently:
Before installing the edge protectors, inspect the pallet. Make sure it is dry, free of broken boards and placed on a flat surface. Arrange the boxes evenly and avoid significant overhangs at the sides. Keep the centre of gravity in the central area of the pallet, especially when transporting heavy products such as automotive parts or construction materials.
A stable base reduces the pressure exerted on the edges and increases the effectiveness of the edge protectors.
Select the edge protectors according to the type of load. For lightweight boxes or textiles, a thickness of 3–4 mm is suitable for standard use. For household appliances, beverage multipacks or compactly packaged pharmaceutical products, opt for 5–6 mm. For dense materials or palletised liquids, use 7–8 mm.
The length should cover almost the entire height of the pallet. If you have a 120 cm pallet, choose edge protectors between 100 and 120 cm. This protects the areas most exposed to compression.
Place one edge protector on each vertical edge. Press them against the boxes and keep them aligned from the base to the top. If the load is sensitive, also add edge protectors along the top edge, beneath the straps.
Always install the edge protectors before applying the stretch film. If you add them afterwards, the effectiveness of the protection is significantly reduced.
Apply stretch film from the bottom upwards, with an overlap of approximately 50% between layers. Tension it in a controlled manner. The pressure should compact the stack without deforming the boxes. The edge protectors will absorb part of the force and distribute the loads vertically.
For large volumes, use wrapping machines or automatic strapping systems. Professional equipment reduces tension variations and increases process repeatability.
Finally, visually check the alignment of the edge protectors and perform a gentle rocking test. If you notice box movement or deformed areas, adjust the tension or add extra protection.

When adding edge and corner protection, many people use only two edge protectors to reduce costs. This approach weakens the pallet structure. Use at least four pieces for each standard pallet.
Also avoid choosing an unsuitable thickness. An edge protector that is too thin will not provide sufficient protection, while one that is too thick may increase costs without delivering real benefits for lightweight loads. Consult the technical specifications and match them to the total weight.
Do not neglect environmental conditions. If you store goods in areas with high humidity, request treated versions or combine the protection with industrial-grade stretch film.
In e-commerce and logistics, pallet stability reduces damage and speeds up handling. In the pharmaceutical or electronics industries, you protect packaging that is sensitive to compression. In furniture manufacturing or construction, you prevent damage to the edges of panels and boards.
