Types of Cardboard Boxes

The cardboard packaging box was created in Germany in 1817.

In 1890, Scotsman Robert Gair invented pre-cut cardboard, specifically flat pieces that could be folded into boxes. This invention came about by accident while he was printing an order of seed bags. In this way, Gair discovered that he could produce prefabricated cardboard boxes, bringing a simple development to the 20th century.

Cardboard boxes were developed in France around 1840 for transporting moths and their eggs by silk manufacturers, becoming a major industry for more than a century.

Cardboard boxes are an excellent choice for storing or transporting products because they are made from a recyclable material that is both lightweight and strong, available in different shapes, sizes and thicknesses, and at minimal cost.

There are different types of cardboard boxes:

1. Single-wall cardboard boxes are strong, lightweight and cost-effective, being made from a single layer of corrugated cardboard and two layers of flat cardboard. They protect products and are resistant to tearing, moisture and temperature changes. The smooth outer layer makes it easier to apply adhesive tape and labels. Single-wall cardboard boxes, also known as CO3 cardboard boxes, are available in a wide range of sizes and can be used for storage, packaging and transport.

2. Double-wall cardboard boxes are much more resistant when stacked and when transporting fragile products. Made from three layers of flat cardboard and two layers of corrugated cardboard, these boxes retain their shape during transport, offering much greater impact resistance and durability than single-wall cardboard boxes. Double-wall cardboard boxes are also known as CO5 cardboard boxes and are suitable for glassware, household items, accessories and more.

3. Triple-wall cardboard boxes for transporting heavy items are particularly strong and are generally used to transport metal parts, boilers, pumps, compressors, machinery and industrial tools. They are also used for export because they are lightweight and strong at the same time, with a capacity of up to 500 kg. Although they are made from triple-wall cardboard, they are delivered flat-packed for easier storage and to save space.
